Olusegun Obasanjp, the former president of Nigeria, joins Sir David to discuss the current crisis in the
Democratic Republic of Congo and the indictment of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an
arrest warrant for Sudan's president on charges of
war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
But the court in The Hague stopped short of
accusing Omar al-Bashir of genocide. He denies the
charges. Thousands of protesters took to the streets
of the capital, Khartoum, after the announcement,
amid fears of unrest. The UN estimates about
300,000 people have died and millions been
displaced in six years of conflict in Darfur.

The Security Council today condemned the
renewed military incursions in eastern Chad of
Chadian armed groups, coming from outside
and demanded that rebel armed groups cease
the violence immediately.
In a statement read by President Vitaly Churkin
( Russian Federation), the Council stressed that
any attempt at destabilization of Chad by force
was unacceptable, and called on all parties to
re-engage in dialogue in the framework of the
Sirte agreement of 25 October 2007.

On the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the
UN Mission there (MONUC) says it has helped
extract 23 children from the ranks of armed
groups in North Kivu in recent weeks.  At least
four of these children were most recently
associated with the Government Army, whose
ranks they joined as members of the CNDP, the
National Congress for the Defence of the
People.  The Mission explains that the
children landed in Government ranks as a
result of an accelerated integration process
that brought a majority of CNDP fighters into
the Congolese Army following a peace deal
between the Government and the CNDP.
The Mission in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo (MONUC) reports that Rwandan rebels
are now surrendering at a rate of 146 fighters a
month.  That’s four times last year’s average of
37 fighters a
month.
