Sierra Leone
GHANA 2008
THE ROAD TO GHANA 2008. Will it be a smooth sail for Sierra Leone or will it be another up-hill battle we
have been so used to facing. Leone Stars of Sierra Leone will soon face Mali in the CAN 2008 Preliminary
competitions that will determine if Sierra Leone is to be invited in the CAN 2008 competitions to be held in
Ghana in 2008.
Since the outbreak of the rebel war in 1991, Sierra Leone has not had a formidable force to counter any of
its opponents in sub-regional soccer competitions. Although FIFA (Federation International Football
Association) has made strides in helping to get the national team back in line with the other teams in the
sub-region, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), like most other institutions has been plagued
with in-fighting, corruption and lack the will to put together a formidable force to counter its opponents.
While other sub-regional teams like Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Senegal has made
appearances in World Cup competitions and has proudly displayed their national flags for the whole world
to see, Sierra Leone is still struggling to return to the CAN games. With superstars like Mohamed Kallon
and several other key players playing in the European leagues, its difficult to understand how this national
team could not compete in the sub-region to qualify for CAN games. Could it be poor under utilization of
talented players or could it be total arrogance or the flagrant ignorance and corruption that has gripped
the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA)?

1972. Togo is the only group team that has made World Cup appearance in Germany 2006. Sierra Leone and Benin
has never appeared in CAN semi-final or final matches.
