new weapon to
fight off the

Tunisia, June 29, 2009 — A new international organization
established to level the playing field in litigation of debt claims
by vulture funds against African countries and in the negotiation
of complex commercial transactions, especially on extractive
resources, has been created. The African Legal Support Facility
will help provide relief to African countries that are being sued or
threatened with litigation on their debt held by hedge funds or
vulture funds.

Ottawa, Canada - A landmark scheme established in 2003 to
prevent trade in conflict diamonds is potentially failing in its
objectives, campaigners said today. The Kimberly Process
Certification Scheme (KPCS), which was instituted to help the
international community track the source of diamonds from
their countries of origin may be in danger of loosing its

Rwandan Genocide
Criminal,
Callixte
Kalimanzira
sentenced to
30 years in prison by the
International Criminal
Court.
Rwanda, June 29, 2009 - /ABC Television-Africa (ABC)/ The
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda this morning
sentenced Callixte Kalimanzira, a former official of the
Rwandan Interior Ministry, to 30 years in prison.  He was
found guilty of genocide, direct and public incitement to
commit genocide, and aiding and abetting genocide.
Sierra Leone Chiefs ban genital cutting (Bondo
Society) for girls under 18 years old. A victory for
UNICEF.

FREETOWN, 16 April 2009 (IRIN) - In Sierra Leone village
chiefs, community members and women who perform
female genital cutting have signed an agreement stating
that girls in northern Kambia district will not undergo genital
mutilation – or ‘cutting’ – before age 18.            >>>more

Washington DC, May 1, 2009 - Sierra Leone ranks 3rd in
freedom in both political rights and civil liberties in
sub-Saharan Africa according to Freedom House, an
organization that monitors civil liberties and political rights of
individuals throughout the world. Among the 48 countries of
sub-Saharan Africa, 10 were rated Free for their performance
in calendar year 2008, while 23 were rated Partly Free and 15
were rated Not Free. Sierra Leone was rated Partly Free.
